Fake Alexa app for iOS in the Market

When it comes to the Apple App Store, the possibility of finding a fake app is far lesser than in Android. Having said that, an iPhone app store developer recently managed to make money through three fake iPhone apps.

One of them essentially had to do with a fake Amazon Alexa device setup app. So, if you have recently bought an Amazon Alexa device and search for a setup app on App Store, then you must come across an app called “Setup for Amazon Alexa”.

This app guided users to set up their Alexa device. While it appeared harmless, the app asked for the IP address and a serial number of the Alexa device. Meanwhile, while the app guided users, it also earned money through ads.

The fake “Setup for Amazon Alexa” went unnoticed and was ranked 6th in the utility category while being the 60th most downloaded app on the Apple store. Apple finally realized this and took down this app. Along with this, two other apps were also taken down by Apple which was published by One World Software.

In another news, Amazon Alexa recently made headlines for sending thousands of voice recording of a user to a stranger. An Amazon Alexa user in Germany had claimed that he got access to more than a thousand recordings of another Amazon Alexa user.

The other two apps were called Marketplay- Buy/Sell while other is a paid app called ‘Any Font for Instagram” for 99 cents.
So, if you have any of these apps installed on your iPhone, delete them immediately.

Also, when you buy a new Alexa device, opt for the original Alexa app on both Android or iOS. This is important because your privacy might be at risk while using third-party apps.

The customer is said to have asked the voice assistant for the recording of his activities and by mistake, Alexa gave him access to 1700 audio files of another user.
Commenting on the mix-up, Amazon Spokesperson said, “This unfortunate case was the result of a human error and an isolated single case. We resolved the issue with the two customers involved and took measures to further optimize our processes. As a precautionary measure, we contacted the relevant authorities.
